    阮籍是魂晋之际著名的玄学家，早年有济世之志，后遭典午之变而隐身不与世事。本书通过对阮籍主要哲学著作的不同思想倾向的详密考察，揭示了阮籍思想由儒而玄的演变轨迹，指明了阮籍早期以儒学思想为主，崇尚礼乐刑政一体之治，后来有感于名教的堕落，遂转入庄学思想轨道，崇尚自然和追求个体的精神自由。但由于儒家思想仍然发生作用，再加上他对现实的失望，因而在他那里形成了一个焦虑苦闷的精神世界，构成了一个双重结构的人格。本书从多角度，采用动态方法，并与有关士人相比较，对阮籍的思想、人格及生活情趣加以深入探讨，从一个侧面展现了当时士人的思想风貌以及时代精神的基本特征。
